The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has made history as Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Major, joining the world’s most prestigious marathon series alongside iconic races such as London, Berlin, Tokyo, Boston, Chicago and New York.

Already recognised internationally as a World Athletics Elite Label road race, Cape Town has established itself as one of Africa’s premier running events. The marathon welcomes tens of thousands of runners, including thousands of international participants, to experience 42.2km through one of the world’s most spectacular cities.

The 2027 Cape Town Marathon will be the first edition staged as an official Abbott World Marathon Major, marking a historic new chapter for marathon running in Africa.

Cape Town Marathon 2027 — Itinerary

Thursday, 20 May — Arrival in Cape Town
Arrive in Cape Town and make your way to the hotel for check-in. Settle in, meet the JRT team and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Friday, 21 May — Expo & Meet and Greet
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before heading to the Cape Town Marathon Expo to collect your race pack and explore the official event exhibitions. In the evening, join the JRT family for our Meet & Greet Dinner.

Saturday, 22 May — Race Preparation
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning and some free time in Cape Town. The remainder of the day is dedicated to final race preparation and getting ready for the big day.

Sunday, 23 May — Cape Town Marathon
It’s race day! After an early breakfast, get ready to take on Africa’s first Abbott World Marathon Major. Experience 42.2km through the Mother City and be part of a historic first edition as an official Major. After the race, return to the hotel to recover and celebrate your achievement.

Monday, 24 May — Departure
Enjoy your final breakfast at the hotel before checking out. Depart Cape Town with your medal, memories and another incredible marathon experience completed.
